We had another terrific meeting, with lots of members attending. It was also good to see a lot of people either renewing their membership or obtaining a new membership. There were lots of interesting things that happened:
- Shane started with a welcome to all our members and visitors.
- Our first book talk was Samurai Shortstop by Alan Gratz given by Tony Spallino
- Tonnye Fletcher discussed the Young Author's project and some of the new rules that are in place. She also asked for building reps from other schools, especially high schools to help handle the contest entries.
- Wanda Webb from Scholastic will be here on 1/19 to discuss Boys and Books.
- We then had a presentation from Ellen Gould representing the NC Farm Bureau to discuss using Agriculture in the Classroom
- There was a read aloud from Gregory the Terrible Eater
- Discussion followed over the benefits of read aloud and reading level increases
- Ellen discussed the many lesson plans on the Farm Bureau web site
- She demonstrated the Nutrition & Fitness kit that's available. Discussed was the new food guide pyramid, some shared lessons that are available in the kit, members read "Pigs will be Pigs" and used it for a math lesson.
- Intermission with snacks followed.
- We finished with a video on sweet potatoes that was composed by NC students. This was concluded with an activity using coffee filters and facts from the video.
Another very informative meeting!! We're looking forward to next week's meeting!!
